Environment Ministry disposes of 2,000 tons of organic pesticides

The Environment Ministry has been able to dispose of some 2,000 tons of persistent organic pesticides, a senior official said Sunday.

Ahmed Abdel Hamid, the director of a project designed to manage Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), proudly announced that the plan to protect the local and global environment against emissions, that would otherwise have resulted from burning such pesticides, was successful.

He was speaking during a ceremony organized by the Environment Ministry to shed light on the project.

Abdel Hamid told the gathering that environmental and social commitment posed a major challenge to the project, which was implemented in line with Egyptian law and World bank regulations.

Thorough environmental studies have been conducted, he said, noting that the plan had been outlined to address 32 sites but 70 sites were handled.

Abdel Hamid lauded societal participation, which was a good reason why this project was a success.

He made it clear that 1.4 million citizens benefited from this project.
