Environment Ministry lays down IT structure of regional units for regular marine debris management

Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said her ministry is now laying down the IT structure for municipal-level units to be tasked with regular sea waste monitoring as part of efforts for establishing an effective national integrated marine debris observing system.

The IT structure will link all units to a unified digital network, she said, noting that the unit in Alexandria will be a central part of the system.

The Environment Ministry will be responsible for offering the finances needed for updating all data fed to the system on a regular basis, added Fouad in an address given at a workshop on sustainable management of sea waste littering the Red Sea coast on Saturday, which was delivered on her behalf by CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency Ali Abu Sena.

She pointed out to “transition to the blue” project, that is financed by the World Bank along with several NGOs.

The project aims to change wrong behaviors by some people by raising public awareness of hazards posed by marine debris to the sea environment and natural resources.
