The European Union (EU) and United States said on Tuesday they intend to continue to coordinate bilateral and multilateral responses to keep the global energy markets stable.

This was expressed in a joint statement following the tenth EU-US Energy Council hosted in Brussels.

The Council recognized the importance of energy relations and notably the role of gas and renewable energy supplies to the EU from and through regions such as the South Caucasus, Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, it said.

The pivotal role of reliable energy partners in these regions calls for mutually beneficial cooperation on security of energy supplies as well as enhanced cooperation on critical infrastructure, stressed the statement.

They reaffirmed the importance of Transatlantic energy cooperation especially against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine and to providing emergency energy assistance to Ukraine and other heavily affected countries such as Moldova.

In light of their commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 while ensuring a socially just clean-energy transition, the two sides said they would intensify joint work to make energy efficiency a global priority.

Accelerating the energy transition, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and reducing energy consumption are key to strengthening energy security and countering attempts to weaponise energy, it said.

The Council reiterated its condemnation in the strongest possible terms of “Russia’s illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine.” The EU-US Energy Council was co-chaired by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk.
