Late on March 2, several explosions were heard in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra where many key positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) are located.
The explosions reportedly took place along the Separation of Forces Line that separates al-Quneitra from the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights. Some Syrian activists claimed that the explosions were the result of an Israeli attack. However, this is yet to confirmed.
In the last few years, Israeli battle tanks, attack helicopters, missile systems and commando units destroyed several positions of the SAA in al-Quneitra.
The most recent Israeli attack on the governorate, which took place on February 23, targeted two observation posts of the SAA. Right after the attack, the Israeli military dropped leaflets warning Syrian troops against cooperating with Lebanese Hezbollah.
Israel claims that Hezbollah is trying to build a network of cells in al-Quneitra in cooperation with elements of the SAA with the aim of launching attacks on the occupied part of the Golan Heights. However, to this day no serious attack attempts were reported.
More information about the mysterious explosions in al-Quneitra will likely surface soon. Israeli attacks on the region are usually confirmed by the Syrian or the Israeli media within a few days.
