FM Permanent Secretary tells CNA of “very difficult moments” as one Cypriot confirmed dead, another missing in Greece

“These are very difficult moments,” Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kornelios Korneliou told CNA, on Friday, referring to the confirmation of the identification of the remains of 23-year-old law student Kyprianos Papaioannou from Avgorou, who had been missing since the Tempi train tragedy on Wednesday.

Student Anastasia Adamidou from Paphos remains missing.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Korneliou said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was informed around 10pm local time by the Cyprus embassy in Athens that the Greek authorities confirmed the identification of Kyprianos Papaioannou’s body and informed his family at the same time.

“We are waiting to hear about Anastasia in the coming hours. We do not have any official information about Anastasia at this time,” he said.

Responding to a related question, he said that “it is not known when the body will be transported. These are very difficult moments.”

Kyprianos’ family is in Greece, along with the Cypriot Ambassador to Athens and the Consul General who were with them until last night. Anastasia’s family returned from Greece last night.
