Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for reaching a comprehensive political settlement for the Syrian crisis under the UN Security Council resolution no. 2254 as soon as possible.

The minister made his remarks on Saturday 01/04/2023 when he received his Syrian counterpart Faisal Al-Mikdad at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s HQ, in the first visit to Cairo in more than 10 years.

The visit included a closed-door meeting between Shoukry and Mikdad ahead of expanded talks between the Egyptian and Syrian delegations, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Both sides discussed means to boost bilateral ties to serve the interests of Egyptian and Syrian peoples as well as a number of regional and international issues of common interest.

Shoukry voiced Egypt’s backing for efforts exerted by the United Nations special envoy to Syria to solve the Syrian crisis, stressing that the political settlement of the Syrian conflict contributes to ending foreign interference, restoring security and stability in the Arab country and uprooting all forms of terrorism.

For his part, Al-Mikdad lauded Egypt’s support for Syria throughout its crisis, extending thanks to Cairo over humanitarian aid sent to Syria following the recent deadly earthquake.

Both ministers agreed on intensifying communication between the two countries at all levels in the coming period, Abu Zeid added.
