Foreign ministers of GCC states plus Jordan, Egypt and Iraq held talks over the past hours on means of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis and bring back the nation to the Arab fold, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said early on Saturday.

The ministry, in a statement issued following conclusion of the consultative meeting that involved the Kuwaiti Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, said they agreed on the necessity of resolving the Syrian crisis, ensuring delivery of humanitarian aid to all Syrian regions and returning the refugees and the relocated to their homes.

It affirmed necessity of combating all forms of terrorism, its organizations, dealing in drugs, that the State institutions preserve Syria’s sovereignty and eliminating presence of the armed militias and foreign intervention in the domestic affairs.

The ministers during the deliberations affirmed that the political settlement is the sole option for reolving the crisis, noting the need for a leading Arab role in the efforts to end the crisis.

On Palestine, they affirmed that the Palestinian cause remained the national central issue, condemned illegitimate Israeli practices that would undermine efforts to resolve the strife on the basis of the two states’ solution.

The GCC and Arab ministers condemned Israeli attacks on the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque, desecration of the holy sites, affirmed necessity of respecting the legal and historic status quo of these sites, noting that Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is an exclusive worship site for Muslims, that the administration of Jerusalem and the mosque affairs remained part of the Jordanian authorities’ jurisdictions The Saudi foreign ministry noted that the informal consultations were held in Jeddah as part of the Kingdom approach and keenness on serving causes of the Arab nation and were held in response to an invitation by the Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan for addressing issues of joint interest.
