BEIRUT: Former President Amine Gemayel has called on Lebanese authorities to preserve a strong security presence in the town of Rmeish, following local opposition to the potential evacuation of the gendarmerie station, a crucial symbol of state authority in the border region. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Gemayel engaged in a phone conversation with Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Rabih Moujais, highlighting the essential role of state security agencies in southern Lebanon. The region has been subject to ongoing attacks amid the country's existential crisis. Gemayel emphasized that the gendarmerie station in Rmeish is the last remaining representation of the Lebanese state in the area, cautioning that its withdrawal would leave the region and its residents vulnerable to potential threats. Brigadier General Moujais reassured Gemayel that security forces would maintain their presence in Rmeish, affirming their dedication to the safety of local residents. "We will remain here to protect the citizens of Rmeish," Moujais stated, underscoring the commitment of security forces to the area. In addition to his conversation with the gendarmerie chief, Gemayel also contacted Father George Al-Amil, the parish priest of Rmeish, to understand the situation of the residents and express his support. Gemayel praised the community's resilience amidst adversity, reflecting concerns for the stability of southern Lebanon as tensions rise.
