VIENNA, 25th September, 2023 (WAM) — The 67th session of the annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) kicked off today in Vienna, Austria, with a high-level delegation from the agency’s 177 member states in attendance.The conference, which continues until 29th September, is the IAEA’s highest policy-making body. During the conference, delegates will discuss a range of topics related to the development of the nuclear energy sector and the global nuclear energy scene.Under the slogan “Global Cooperation in the Nuclear Field”, the conference will also see discussions on the IAEA’s programmes and budget, starting with the unveiling of the Agency’s annual report for 2022 and the 2024 budget, as well as topics related to enhancing activities related to science, technology, and nuclear applications.Other topics on the agenda include the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security activities, enhancing the effectiveness and improvement of nuclear energy, and discussing the efficiency of th
e Agency’s safeguards.The agency is hosting about 50 side events, highlighting different aspects of the agency’s work.In conjunction with the General Conference, the IAEA will host the scientific forum from 26th to 27th September under the slogan “Nuclear Innovations for Net Zero”. The forum will explore innovative ways to use nuclear energy as the reliable backbone for clean, affordable, resilient, and safer energy transitions.In addition to the side events, the IAEA will organise guided visits for delegates to its Accident and Emergency Centre, the Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory, the Isotope Hydrology Laboratory, the IAEA Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf, and the Safeguards Equipment Laboratories.
