Amman: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock began a visit to East Africa on Wednesday in a bid to push for sanctions on the warring parties in Sudan and to hold them accountable in order to force them to negotiate for peace.

According to Deutsche Welle, Baerbock said in a statement before her trip: “In cooperation with my partners in Djibouti, Kenya, and South Sudan, I will explore the possibilities of bringing Generals Burhan and Hemedti to the negotiating table so that they do not drag the Sudanese people deeper into the abyss and further destabilize the region.”

She added in the statement: “It is clear that we need to increase pressure on both sides through sanctions, holding them accountable for their violations against civilians, and influencing their supporters abroad.”
