VALLETTA: The Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, in cooperation with the Parliament of Malta, organised a conference, under the theme “Calling for Sustainable International Peace and Launch of the Global Tolerance Index”, featuring the heads and representatives of a number of regional parliaments.

The conference, held at the headquarters of the Parliament of Malta in Valletta, aimed to turbocharge action promoting tolerance and sustainable peace around the world.

In his opening speech at the conference, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, President of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, said that it is important to realise that there is a vital link between the sustainability of peace and climate security, saying, “without a peaceful, tolerant, and cooperative humanity, we cannot achieve climate security, and vice versa. Without a safe climate and a clean earth, we cannot hope for sustainable peace”.

Al Jarwan called on the Council’s partners to adhere to its principles of promoting tolerance and im
plementing sustainable strategies for the sake of the planet and its people.

During the conference, Al Jarwan announced the launch of the Global Tolerance Index, through which the Council will work with its partners and members to develop mechanisms to measure tolerance on a global scale. The index will measure the progress of countries working to build societies that support diversity, respect human dignity, and achieve tolerance in various fields. It will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of efforts to promote tolerance and inspire nations to design strategies that better promote a culture of tolerance and support global peace.

The conference issued its closing statement entitled “Declaration for Sustainable International Peace”, which was signed by the Speaker of the Maltese Parliament; the President of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace; the President of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), Ronaldo Patricio; and the President of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen)
, Silvia García Polanco.

On the sidelines of the conference, Al Jarwan and Polanco signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster cooperation and joint work between the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace and the Central American Parliament.

Al Jarwan also signed a similar MoU with Ronaldo Patricio, who is also the Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Cuban National Assembly of People’s Power.

These agreements set the framework for cooperation and joint work in promoting tolerance and peace at the parliamentary level.
