In a compelling address at the Green Room side event organized by “Juventud Unida en Action” from Venezuela, Mrs. Marie Therese Merhej Seif, Chairman of the Human Environmental Association for Development (HEAD) Lebanon, underscored the pivotal role of Arab women grassroots defenders in combatting climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The event, held at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA6) in Nairobi, Kenya, shed light on effective, inclusive, and sustainable actions to tackle pressing environmental issues.

Mrs. Seif emphasized the significant contributions of Arab women in community leadership, particularly in promoting sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and community-based conservation efforts. Rooted in local knowledge, Arab women engage in diverse practices such as seed preservation, sustainable harvesting of medicinal plants, and protection of local flora and fauna.

Moreover, Arab women actively participate in climate change adaptation efforts, especially in vulnerable
areas facing desertification and water scarcity. They champion climate-resilient agriculture, water management, and the development of sustainable livelihoods amidst changing environmental conditions. Advocating for environmental justice, Arab women defenders strive to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for all.

Partnerships between non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and institutions like RAED, AFED, and CANAW signify a concerted effort to address environmental challenges. In several Arab countries, initiatives are underway to integrate gender perspectives into environmental policies, fostering women’s involvement in decision-making processes related to sustainability.

Collaborations with research institutions, universities, and organizations such as the Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF) provide Arab women with access to scientific knowledge and facilitate the promotion of sustainable practices. However, Arab women environmental defenders confront obstacles including gende
r-based discrimination, violence, and limited access to financial resources and technology.

In conclusion, Arab women play indispensable roles in tackling environmental issues across the region. Collaborative endeavors with NGOs, governments, scientific institutions, and businesses are imperative to surmounting barriers and implementing sustainable solutions. Recognizing and supporting the contributions of Arab women is fundamental to advancing environmental conservation and resilience in the Arab world.
