Housing minister arrives for 1st filling of Egyptian-built dam in Tanzania

Housing Minister Assem el Gazar arrived in Tanzania on Wednesday to take part in a ceremony marking the first filling of the Julius Nyerere Dam constructed by an Egyptian consortium.

The dam is situated on the Rufigi River, and is implemented by Arab Contractors and Elsewedi Electric.

Gazzar, in press statements, said the $3-billion dam is an embodiment of the capabilities of Egyptian firms in executing mega infrastructure projects in African countries, and an example of regional cooperation.

He said the Egyptian government is keen to share with the Tanzanian government and people this big event that will provide needed electricity and help bring Rufigi River flood under control.

The construction of the dam, which is 131 metres high and 1,025 metres long at the summit, was completed 687 days after the diversion of the river in November 2020.

More than 2,500 Egyptian and Tanzanian engineers and workers participated in the construction of the dam.
