Human rights organizations demand protection of women in Gaza

Gaza: Human rights organizations on Sunday called on the international community to take immediate action to stop Israeli occupation violations of the rights of women in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, protect them from Israeli violence, and provide them with the necessary care and needs, including psychological and social support.

The organizations (Palestinian Human Rights, Palestinian Center for Human Rights, Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, and Al-Haq Foundation) said that they are following the unprecedented disaster that has befallen the Palestinian women’s rights reality as a result of the ongoing Israeli aggression.

They added that the repercussions of this aggression and its continuation expose women to physical and psychological violence from Israeli occupation forces, and that the collapse of the health sector and the near absence of health care services due to the ongoing shelling have had a direct impact on the health of mothers and newborns.

They pointed out that the vast majority of the v
ictims of the Israeli aggression on Gaza are women and children, with more than 7,500 women and 12,345 children killed.

They indicated that Israeli shelling has caused pregnant women to lose their fetuses, with a large number of them being killed and others suffering from miscarriages. There are 60,000 pregnant women at risk, and thousands of them are expected to give birth in the coming month. It is likely that hundreds of them will suffer from complications during pregnancy and childbirth in the absence of health care and anesthesia.

They confirmed that there has been an increase in cases of abortion and fetal death as a result of shelling and the use of dangerous weapons such as white phosphorus. Women’s childbirth operations, such as cesarean sections, are also being carried out without adequate anesthesia or painkillers due to a lack of essential medical tools and supplies.

They said that the biggest threat is malnutrition, as pregnant women do not get the vitamins, proteins, and minerals that enable
the body to function, which puts their lives and the lives of their children at risk.

The organizations called on the international community to take immediate action to stop the Israeli occupation violations of the rights of women in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and to hold the Israeli authorities accountable for their crimes against the Palestinian people, including women and children.
