New York, The Information & eGovernment Authority, represented by Duaa Sultan Mohammed, Deputy Chief Executive for Statistics and Population Registry, participated in the 54th sessions (2023) of the United Nations Statistical Commission, held at United Nations headquarter in New York during 28th February to 3rd of March 2023.

iGA participated in the main meetings and workshops organized within the sessions. The agenda contained 14 topics covering the Data and Indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the mechanism for collecting social statistics and the importance of their indicators.

They addressed economic statistics and the regional statistics development, as well as discussing International statistical classifications, Household surveys, big data and more, in addition to other topics that for discussion and decision taking by the committee .

Dua’a stressed that this annual meeting, which is held in March of every year, is one of the essential international platforms that bring together key statistics and data experts from different part of the world, including senior officials of statistical authorities and centers from different countries, in addition to Un officials, International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and other data related authorities and entities.

The Deputy CE for Statistics and Population Registry praised the efforts of the GCC Statistical Center in identifying issues related to the GCC countries in the topics under discussion, noting the importance of the coordination and cooperation among national statistical centers in these aspects.

Moreover, she stressed on the effort of The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in determining the positions of ESCWA countries on the topics discussed during the meeting.

It is worth mentioning that the United Nations Statistical Commission whose membership includes 24 member states of the United Nations, get selected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, including for this year the State of Kuwait, whose membership expires in December 2023, and the Republic of Tunisia, whose membership expires in December 2025.

Established in 1947, the Statistical Commission is the highest body of the global statistical system that brings together senior statisticians from Member States from around the world, responsible for decision-making for international statistical activities, setting statistical standards and developing concepts and methods, including their implementation at the national and international levels.
