Iraqi Protesters Storm Saudi-Owned MBC Channel Headquarters in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: Iraqi demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the Saudi-owned MBC channel in Baghdad on Monday in protest against what they claim is an insult to the late Shia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The protesters accused the channel of labeling al-Muhandis as a "terrorist" in a documentary about the 1983 bombings of the U.S. and French embassies in Kuwait. According to National News Agency-Lebanon, scores of protesters gathered outside the MBC office in central Baghdad before breaking into the building and causing significant damage. The demonstrators, waving photos of al-Muhandis and Iraqi flags, chanted slogans denouncing Saudi Arabia during the protest. "We don't accept any insult to al-Muhandis, who is one of Iraq's symbols," protester Hussein al-Jumaili told the National News Agency-Lebanon. The protest was sparked by a documentary aired by the Saudi-controlled channel, which portrayed al-Muhandis in a negative light. Security forces were deployed to the area and successfully brought the situation under control. As of now, there has been no official comment from MBC regarding the protests or the accusations made by the demonstrators. Al-Muhandis, a prominent figure in the Popular Mobilisation Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi), was killed alongside top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. drone airstrike in Iraq in January.
