Amman: The Lower House on Monday passed draft laws amending the competitiveness and labor laws during a session chaired by Speaker Ahmad Safadi and attended by cabinet members.
The lawmakers endorsed the competitiveness bill as referred by the Economy and Investment Committee, including a proposal to set up a special committee headed by the Minister of Industry and Trade with a number of specialists from the public and private sectors as members.
The “Competitiveness Affairs Committee” will be tasked with ratifying the general competitiveness plan and studying the various tasks stipulated in this law as well as drafting any other relevant legislation or regulations under the law.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali told the chamber of the importance of the law, which underscores the government’s commitment to sending legislation to the house after the passage of the investment environment bill as a translation of the Kingdom’s economic vision.
The key reason behind the amendment is to enhance the protection and promotion of free and effective competition in the market through reviewing regulations prohibiting practices that undermine fair competition and preventing dominance by any institution.
The legislation also regulates the economic concentration processes, stiffens the penalty for violations and curbs the concept of dominant institution.
The labor law amendment for the year 2022 was passed as referred by the House’s Labor and Social Development Committee to help the Labor Ministry carry out programs for employment of Jordanians, regulate the labor market and ensure more legal protection for workers through stiffening penalties for violations of the Labor Law.
It also aims to address the disorganized labor market, regulate incoming labor and gradually replace foreign workers with Jordanian job seekers.
