Chairman of the Lower House Education and Youth Committee, MP Talib Sarayrah, affirmed “quality and efficiency” of Jordan’s education system, especially in medical specializations, and “distinguished” Jordanian universities, which have “outstanding” regional and global presence. Chairing a committee meeting on Wednesday, in the presence of Minister of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafazah, the two sides discussed Kuwaiti Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s decision to suspend scholarships to medical specialties in Jordan, and hike of tuition fees in private schools. Sarayrah added that the committee is scheduled to hold a meeting next week with a number of university presidents and their deans of medical faculties, aimed to examine the decision’s circumstances, stressing “depth” of the brotherly Jordanian-Kuwaiti relations. For his part, Mahafazah said Jordanian universities are known for their “efficiency” according to international rankings, noting that new world rankings for Jordanian universities will be announced at the end of this week, which indicate a “significant” improvement in their performance. Mahafazah also said decision of Kuwaiti Ministry of Education and Higher Education solely stopped scholarships to Jordan and doesn’t refer to accreditation of certificates granted by Jordanian universities. With regard to raising tuition fees by some private schools, he said instructions are in place to regulate this process, which is linked to inflation rate. As per instructions, he noted rate set to hike school tuitions should not exceed 5%, indicating that 210 schools submitted requests to the ministry to raise their fees, but approval was granted to only 27.
