Mexican Embassy in Jordan Honors Local Youths for Contributions to Humanitarian Disarmament

Amman: The Mexican Embassy in Jordan celebrated the achievements of local youths in the international competition "Igniting Change: Youth for Humanitarian Disarmament" on Monday. The event recognized the innovative contributions of four Jordanian participants, spotlighting their creative proposals on the intersection of humanitarian disarmament and sustainable development. This initiative was part of a broader effort co-sponsored by Mexico and the European Union, aligning with the UN Secretary General's "New Agenda for Peace." According to Jordan News Agency, the ceremony acknowledged the efforts of Hussein Emad, Eid Yazan Tareq Saeed, Mahmoud Morad, and Shorouq Hamad, who expressed their ideas through essays and illustrations. A highlight of the event was the recognition of Mahmoud Morad, whose artwork was chosen among the top ten entries globally and showcased in a virtual exhibition during the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention in Geneva. The competition, culminating at the 12th Meeting of State s Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, invited youth aged 18 to 29 to reflect on the harmful impacts of cluster munitions, especially on children and youth. These weapons, which scatter multiple bomblets over a wide area, pose ongoing risks to civilians and are prohibited under the international Convention on Cluster Munitions. The contest participants were encouraged to explore the roles of risk education, humanitarian disarmament, and sustainable development in addressing these challenges. Distinguished guests at the event included representatives from Jordanian universities, civil society organizations, and youth-focused institutions, underscoring the significance of involving young people in global humanitarian efforts and the pivotal role of education in promoting peace and disarmament. The Chargé d'affaires of Mexico in Jordan, Armando Vivanco-Castellanos, in his opening remarks, reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to humanitarian disarmament, highlighting its advocacy for the Convention on Clus ter Munitions. He stressed the critical importance of integrating young perspectives in disarmament dialogues, acknowledging that the future of these efforts lies with the emerging generation.
