MIKATI HOLDS HIGH-LEVEL TALKS WITH GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER AND UN ENVOYS, STRESSES LEBANON’S COMMITMENT TO UN RESOLUTION 1701


Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, held a meeting earlier on Wednesday at the Grand Serail with German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock. The meeting primarily focused on bilateral relations between both countries, and the current situations in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

The meeting was attended by Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Abdallah Bou Habib, German Ambassador to Lebanon, Kurt Georg Stoeckl-Stillfried, accompanying German delegates, Prime Minister’s Advisor Ambassador Butros Assaker, and Ziad Mikati.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Mikati emphasized Lebanon’s keenness to foster strong ties with Germany, expressing gratitude for Germany’s comprehensive support to Lebanon. He stressed that Lebanon upholds all international resolutions, starting with the ceasefire agreement, en route to achieving lasting stability in southern Lebanon. He urged support for the Lebanese army to enable it to fulfill its duties effectively.

‘It is time to find a permanent and just solution t
o the Palestinian issue, beginning with a ceasefire and launching an international process for a final and comprehensive solution based on the two-state solution,’ Mikati said.

Meanwhile, the German Minister underscored the importance of ‘implementing UN Resolution 1701.’

Additionally, Mikati welcomed at the Grand Serail United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, who briefed him on the upcoming meeting scheduled next week between the UN Secretary-General and all heads and officials of UN political programs worldwide. Wronecka also discussed with Mikati the content of his message directed to the Secretary-General concerning Resolution 1701, and the situation in south Lebanon.

Moreover, Mikati met with the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, Imran Riza, discussing development programs and the 2024 development plan, as well as economic and livelihood issues concerning Lebanese citizens, reaffirming the ongoing cooperation between the United Nations and the Le
banese state.

Additionally, Mikati met Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hani Chemaitelly, Lebanon’s Ambassador to the UK Rami Mortada, Mount Lebanon Governor Judge Mohammad Mekawi, and President of the Council for Development and Reconstruction Nabil Al-Jisr.
