Local exports increased during the first five months of 2023 by 6.8 percent, reaching JD3.415 billion, compared to about JD3.197 billion for the same period last year. The Department of Statistics report on foreign trade issued Wednesday indicated that the value of total exports, which include local and imported products that were re-exported, climbed by 5.6 percent in the January-May period of 2023, hitting JD3.683 billion against JD3.486 billion for the same period in 2022. Re-exports amounted to JD268 million during the same five months, a decline of 7.4 percent, compared to JD289 million. As for imports, their value edged up in the same timeframe by 1.2 percent to JD7.649 billion, compared to JD7.559 billion. According to the figures, the trade balance deficit (the difference between the value of imports and the value of exports) decreased by 2.6 percent to reach JD3.966 billion against JD4.072 billion for the same period in 2022. On the monthly level, total exports amounted to JD810 million in May 2023, an increase of 19.6 percent, compared to the same month of last year, while local exports reached JD733 million, up by 18.5 percent. Re-exports amounted to JD77 million (up 31 percent), imports came at JD1.836 billion (up 9.2 percent), while the trade balance deficit inched up by 2.3 percent to JD1.026 billion in the same month.
