The explosion that killed five people east of Gaza City and injured many others was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today – al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida.

They said five people were killed and 25 were injured when an explosive device blew up in unclear circumstances.

They said the explosion occurred when a demonstration was underway near the border fence with Israel in protest against Israeli measures against the Palestinian freedom fighters held in Israeli jails.

In other news, al-Quds daily said the Israeli occupation authorities intensified military measures in the Nablus district, closing roads and setting up checkpoints, demolished a shop in Jerusalem, and issued demolition orders against six storages in al-Ouja village near Jericho.

It also said six people were killed in the ongoing fighting in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon.

The paper also said 23 Palestinian expatriates were killed in the Libya floods, where more than 6,000 people have so far been declared dead as a result of the floods from the Daniel hurricane that hit the eastern parts of Libya.

Al-Ayyam daily said Libya continues to count and bury its dead as more people are becoming homeless.

It said Daniel hurricane that devastated Libya later left its effects on the Gaza Strip where rainwater flooded homes and agricultural lands.

The paper said the Palestinian security denied receiving any equipment from Israel and quoted a US official, who remained anonymous, denying that the United States sent weapons, ammunition, or equipment to the Palestinian Authority, stressing that the US security aid to the Palestinians does not include weapons.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said President Mahmoud Abbas called the head of the Libyan Presidential Council to offer condolences for the dead in the floods.

It also said Fatah Central Council denounced the statement by Palestinians that touched on a speech by President Abbas on the Holocaust.

It quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh telling the new European Union Representative in Palestine Alexandre Stutzmann that Israel is drying up the Palestinian economy.

The paper also quoted member of Fatah Central Committee and the PLO’s Executive Committee, Azzam al-Ahmad, saying that calls from foreign intelligence in Lebanon incite and entice armed groups to continue fighting in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp and that Israel is not far from what is going on.
