Jewish fanatics storming the Muslim holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City, Al-Aqsa Mosque, the decision by Saudi Arabia to call off talks on the US-led normalization of relations with Israel, and UNESCO declaring the old city of Jericho known as Tel al-Sultan a World Heritage Site were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.Al-Quds daily made the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque as its main front-page story and said in the headline: ‘The occupation forces remove and arrest dozens of (Muslim) worshippers at the Mosque (as) 426 settlers headed by (fanatic Jewish settler) Glick storm Al-Aqsa on the Jewish New Year.’Al-Ayyam daily touched on this subject on its front page and said that the occupation forces restricted entry of Muslim worshippers into Al-Aqsa Mosque while facilitating the entry of the settlers. However, the daily’s main front-page story concentrated on the decision by Saudi Arabia to stop normalization contacts with Israel and said in the headline: ‘Saudi Arab
ia stop talks on normalization due to Israel’s refusal to move forward on the Palestinian issue.’Al-Quds also highlighted this topic and more or less the same headline. The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, while also highlighting the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque, particularly one of the settlers blowing the shofar, which it said was a precedent, its main front-page story had the headline in big letters: ‘Tel al-Sultan … the sultan of the World Heritage List.’It said President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the UNESCO decision and stressed that the State of Palestine will always preserve the ancient Jericho site for all of humanity.Al-Quds and al-Ayyam dailies also highlighted this topic and al-Quds said Israel has condemned the decision.Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Abbas arrived last night in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, and al-Ayyam daily the president is going to make his speech at the UN on Thursday and he is expected to meet a number of world leaders on the sidelines of the
Assembly meetings.Al-Ayyam said in another report that the Palestinian factions in Gaza called on Hanna Nasser, the head of the Central Elections Commission, to meet to talk about local municipal elections.Al-Quds said a large Palestinian delegation from the West Bank is going to visit the Gaza Strip in an initiative by Palestinian businessman Bashar Masri. It also said that, according to Israeli statistics, the Palestinians make 40 percent of the population of Jerusalem, which is the poorest among the large cities.Al-Ayyam quoted the World Bank saying the Palestinian economy faces high risks due to Israeli restrictions, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh headed to New York to attend the meeting of donor countries for Palestine, the AHLC.
