At least 10 people, including a local leader of a key opposition party, were killed in an ambush in northwest Pakistan on Monday, the police said.

Atif Munsif Khan, a leader of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, and nine others were killed when their vehicle was attacked by a rival group in Havelian town of Abbottabad district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Umar Tufail, the district police chief, told reporters that the vehicle in which Khan and his colleagues and security guards were traveling caught fire after it was attacked and was completely charred.

The attack is seen as the result of an old rivalry between the two local political groups.

The police were conducting raids in order to apprehend the suspects.

The slain Khan was the son of a former provincial minister, Munsif Khan Jadoon, and was an active member of the PTI.
