PM chairs 11th meeting of COP27 Supreme Committee

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said coordination is underway between relevant state bodies to ensure an outstanding organization of the upcoming global climate summit (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh next month.

 

Madbouli made the remarks on Sunday while chairing the 11th meeting of the supreme committee concerned with preparing for COP27, held to follow up ongoing preparations for the global climate event, in the presence of the ministers concerned, the governor of South Sinai, and a host of senior officials from relevant state bodies.

 

Foreign Minister and President Designate COP27 Sameh Shoukry posted the premier on the results of the important climate talks that the minister had held on the sidelines of his participation in the high-level meetings of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) in New York last month.

 

Shoukry also touched upon the results of the coordination meetings with the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in late September, which discussed the summit agenda, side events, as well as logistical and organizational details.

 

Shoukry emphasized the great importance the State attaches to engaging civil societies in climate action and facilitating their participation in the global climate event.

 

He said Egypt is the first hosting country to dedicate a separate day in the summit agenda to for NGOs.

 

During the meeting, Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad briefed the prime minister on the progress of ongoing coordination efforts among ministries and relevant bodies in preparation for the summit.

 

She also posted the premier on the implementation status of climate-related initiatives to be launched during the global climate conference, as well as the outcomes of recent meetings of the G20 and African ministers of environment.

 

ICT Minister Amr Talaat reviewed his ministry’s efforts to provide essential technological infrastructure at the Green Zone, an area in the Peace Park in Sharm El-Sheikh for private sector and NGO representatives participating in the conference, and Blue Zone, a 6000m² purpose-built Innovation Zone that will connect national governments with cities, regions, businesses and investors to accelerate the delivery of stronger and more ambitious climate action.

 

Meanwhile, Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar briefed the prime minister on the ministry’s medical security for the summit.

 

For his part, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait outlined the progress of implementing the outcomes of the meetings of the financial committee concerned with the event financing, including sponsorship strategies, sponsor selection criteria, and anticipated and financial contributions.

 

Maait also spoke about ongoing coordination with the Civil Aviation Ministry to set up a special area for customs procedures at Sharm El Sheikh International Airport.
