RAMALLAH: Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa today hailed Spain’s commitment to recognise the State of Palestine as genuine support to the two-state solution.

During a phone call with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, Prime Minister Mustafa stressed that Spain’s intention to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state constitutes genuine support to the two-state solution in light of Israel’s attempts to sabotage it along with the prospects for peace.

He discussed with the top Spanish diplomat boosting cooperation and highlighted the importance of convening the Joint Palestinian-Spanish Ministerial Commission.

He expressed his appreciation to Spain for its support to Palestine and the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people in various international forums as well as for its significant role within the European Union.

He also voiced his appreciation to Spain for the additional support to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation in t
he blockaded Gaza Strip.

Albares congratulated the newly appointed Prime Minister Mustafa on the formation of his government and expressed sincere hopes for the success of the newly constituted government in advancing the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

This week, Albares confirmed in a statement Spain’s intention to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, aligning with the previously stated position by the president, before July, as per the minister’s statement.

During an interview with state-owned radio RNE, Albares emphasized Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s strong determination towards this goal.

Sanchez ‘has a very firm will for it. We are talking with our European partners, as well as our Arab partners,’ Albares said.

He highlighted that Spain is engaged in an active dialogue with global actors to establish a ‘realistic and viable’ Palestinian state, which is crucial for Middle East peace.

Expressing the need for political will to implement the established formula, Albares stressed
the importance of commitment.
