Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, said today that it is the Palestinian people who grant legitimacy in Jerusalem, not Israel or the United States. ‘Jerusalem, with its Islamic and Christian sanctities, is the eternal capital of the State of Palestine, and the Palestinian people have the legitimacy and the historical right to it,’ Abu Rudeineh said in a statement commenting on Israel’s provocative flag-waving march in occupied Jerusalem. He described the Israeli flag-waving march as a ‘provocation and escalation that is condemned and rejected,’ stressing that ‘these actions do not give legitimacy to anyone, and only the Palestinian people are the owners of the land and the right.’ Abu Rudeineh held the Israeli occupation’s government fully responsible for this escalation and its repercussions, which he said could lead to an ‘explosion’ of the situation. He added that all the resolutions of international legitimacy, the most important of which is Resolution 2334, declared unequivocally that East Jerusalem is an integral part of the land of the State of Palestine occupied since 1967. ‘The US administration does not give legitimacy to anyone, and its silent stance towards the Israeli attacks has encouraged the occupation authorities to persist in their attacks and violations against the Palestinian people,’ he continued. Abu Rudeineh commended the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their defense of their land and sanctities, despite all the Israeli measures.
