VIENNA: Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, President of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference, emphasised the importance of the Document on Human Fraternity that was signed in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, on February 4, 2019, by His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church, in promoting peaceful coexistence. He lauded the efforts made to issue this document that brings peoples together.

Cardinal Schönborn said this during an international conference held yesterday in the Austria’s capital, Vienna, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Document on Human Fraternity, which was called for by the Commission for World Religions of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference.

Cardinal Schönborn stressed that interreligious dialogue is an important part of coexistence, stating, ‘Without love, there is no dialogue or fraternity.’

He pointed to the inclusion of the value of love as a fundamental matter, at the conclusion of the five-page Document on Human Fr
aternity. He also described the rights highlighted in the document as of particular importance.

In turn, Umit Vural, head of Islamic Religious Community of Austria (IGGO), stressed the fundamental importance of peace and security in society, and the importance of the contribution of religions in building bridges and promoting dialogue. He said, ‘The document strengthens our better understanding of each other and our common pursuit of peace.’
