RAMALLAH: Prisoners’ advocacy groups and the family of the detainee Abd al-Rahman Mar’I, who died in prison, said today that the Israeli occupation authorities are committing serious crimes against detainees and their families, which are the most serious in decades.

This came during a press conference that followed a closed meeting with a group of consuls and diplomats at the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Ramallah on the issue of the death of Mar’i in Israeli occupation detention centers, and to talk about the latest developments regarding the situation of the detainees in light of the escalation of torture against them.

The groups spoke about what the occupation army does during arrest operations, including shooting and wounding detainees, using them as human shields, beating them, and threatening them with rape.

They called for exerting pressure on the countries that signed the Geneva Conventions to pressure the Israeli occupation authorities to stop their aggression against de
tainees.

The speakers stressed the need to form an impartial and independent international investigation committee to investigate crimes committed against Palestinian detainees, especially those who have been arrested since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7, and to put pressure on Israel to stop the crime of administrative detention.

The head of the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission, Qaddoura Fares, said he briefed the diplomats on the situation of the detainees and confirmed to them that six detainees were killed inside the Israeli occupation detention centers since October 7, the last of whom was Thaer Abu Assab.

He explained that the occupation prison administration would not reveal the name of one of the dead detainees but only said that he is from the Gaza Strip and that perhaps others were killed as a result of torture.

A new fact sheet issued today by the prisoners’ advocacy groups explains the situation of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons since October 7, reveali
ng the systematic abuse and assaults against them and the retaliatory measures imposed.

It said that 4000 arrest cases, the highest rate in Hebron with 1000 cases, were recorded since October 7, including 150 women, some of them from inside Israel, 225 children, 45 journalists, 32 of them are still under arrest, and 2100 orders of administrative detention have been issued.

At the same time, six detainees have died in Israeli prisons. They are Omar Daraghmeh from Tubas, Arafat Hamdan from Ramallah, Majed Zaqqul from Gaza, the fourth is unknown, Abdulrahman Maree from Salfit, and Thaer Abu Assab from Qalqilia.
