Mohamed D. Sidon, Director of the chairman Office of Renewable Energy Authority of Libya, and member of the Libyan delegation to COP28, has highlighted the significance of implementing and advancing eco-friendly initiatives. He stressed the importance of increasing the share of renewable energy projects and expediting their development as a fundamental and impactful approach to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Sidon remarked that the UAE showcased an impressive edition of the United Nations climate change conference, COP28, characterised by its organisation, reception, the raised issues, and the attained results.

Sidon revealed Libya’s intention to implement a number of projects in the field of solar and wind energy with an installed capacity exceeding 4,000 megawatts, pointing out that work is currently underway to raise the percentage of renewable energy in the Libyan national energy system to 20 percent by the year 2035.

He explained th
at these pioneering projects are part of the national strategy to develop the field of renewable energy in Libya, and will be implemented at the beginning of 2024.

The Libyan national strategy also includes the launch of the ‘Go Green’ initiative, in addition to the national energy efficiency plan, which aims to reduce the percentage of electrical energy consumption by 5 to 10 percent by 2035.

He added that Libya has a distinguished geographical location that qualifies it to be a leading country in the field of renewable energy

In this regard, Sidon also added that over the past two years, Libya has formed a higher committee responsible for preparing an electrical interconnection project between Libya and Malta, Italy, and Greece.
