Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment of Cambodia, emphasised that his country is ready to export clean energy to other countries as well, revealing the signing of an export agreement and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard with one of the countries wishing to import energy from Cambodia.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during his participation in COP28, that Cambodia is on track to achieving the goal of increasing the share of renewable energy to 70 percent within 5 years from now, pointing out that its renewable energy targets mean doubling the ASEAN target, a regional commitment they must achieve by 2025.

“In Cambodia we have what we call a circular strategy for the environment, which focuses on cleanliness, greening and sustainability,” he said.

He continued, ‘With regard to cleanliness, we are always working to ensure that the entire Cambodia must be clean in all its aspects, including the air, land, and water as well. As for greening, we are keen to plant trees that
are flexible enough to adapt to climate change.’

Regarding the third item related to sustainability, he indicated that they are committed to renewable energy, as they have currently reached 62 percent of renewable energy out of their total energy needs in Cambodia, pointing out that they aim to reach 70 percent by 2028.

Regarding the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28, he stressed its importance, considering that everyone in it demands action instead of talk.

He concluded his statement by extending a call to industrialised countries, saying, “Let us together save our planet and make it a beautiful place for our generations to live and the next generation to live in.”
