Russia and Iran discuss prospects of solving crisis in Syria

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, discussed with a Russian delegation, including the Russian President’s Special Envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, the latest developments in Syria.

 

Ali Asghar Khaji,Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister, for Special Political Affairs also met the delegation to discuss the necessity of Iran and Russia’s support in combating terrorism in Syria and to preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as cooperation in the reconstruction process.

 

Khaji affirmed the need to continue political efforts in the format of the Astana meetings to resolve the crisis in Syria, voicing his country’s readiness to host these meetings.

 

In turn, the Russian delegation stressed the importance of a political solution to the crisis, declaring readiness to activate joint meetings within the framework of the Astana format.
