School celebrates Black History Month with poetry contest

Manama, Bahrain School has celebrated African-American Month by holding a contest in poetry reciting that focused on the works of famous African American poets.

“The Bahrain Middle High School Poetry Slam included 6th-8th grade contestants reciting poems by famous African -American poets,” Tonya Tehranie, English Language Arts teacher, said.

“It was an opportunity for our students to creatively express themselves through poems by famous African American poets. We are proud to provide all students with diverse opportunities to participate in activities that highlight their creativity and their capabilities.”

A total of 14 students participated in the contest engaging the audience composed of fellow students, parents and teachers by reciting the poems they had selected.

A jury composed of four Bahrain School English language teachers assessed the performances.

First place winner was Jade Courts, followed by Ramsha Haroon who won the second place and third place winner Eirrah Rabor

The contest, co-organized by Yoonsun Choe as the Point of Contact, featured a Bahrain High School monologue performance and Master of Ceremonies, as well as a Bahrain Elementary School step team demonstration.

The Black History Month celebration is a part of Bahrain School’s robust curriculum designed to share with students stories about famous Black figures and teach them important lessons in respect and empathy.
