Senate committee, French envoy talk ties, cooperation

The Senate’s Jordanian-French Friendship Committee, headed by Issa Haidar Murad, on Sunday met with French Ambassador to Jordan, Alexis Le Cour Grandmaison , to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations. Lauding the two countries’ “historic” relations, Murad pointed to their shared political positions on various regional and international issues, the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking to achieve the region’s security and stability. Murad also stressed importance of raising volume of current French investments in the Kingdom to include education, economy, development and communications sectors. He referred to ways to enhance investments aimed to attract French investors to Jordan and strengthening the two countries’ partnership, especially in the economic and parliamentary fields. In this regard, Murad referred to the bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing joint cooperation in the fields of energy, water, religious and historical tourism, public transport and technology sector. He highlighted projects related to food security and areas of military cooperation, given Jordan’s security and stability, and its “appropriate and attractive” investment environment. Meanwhile, French envoy expressed pride in the level of the “distinguished” bilateral relations in various fields and sectors, especially the parliamentary relations between the Jordanian and French senates and mutual visits aimed at strengthening and building on joint relations in the cultural, educational and investment fields. Grandmaison noted France is an “essential” partner for Jordan and supports the Kingdom in working to establish the region’s peace and stability. He also pointed to his country’s support for the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites and for His Majesty King Abdullah II’s positions to find a settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions. He noted French investments in Jordan are the “highest” at the EU level, amounting to about $1,6 billion in various sectors and fields, which contributed to providing about 16,000 direct and indirect jobs opportunities.
