Manama, President of the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa, the member of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA), affirmed the significance of holding the council’s meetings in the Kingdom of Bahrain, at an invitation by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

She voiced appreciation of the members of UNCPGA of the initiative to hold the council’s meetings periodically all over the world, in response to a proposal by the Kingdom of Bahrain, in order to highlight the significant role of the UN in boosting human rights, equality, social justice and joint international work.

Replying to a question by Bahrain News Agency (BNA) on the meeting of His Majesty the King with the UNCPGA members, Shaikha Haya asserted that the meeting was positive and reflected His Majesty’s interest in all issues tackled by the UN, including chiefly global peace and security, promoting human rights and settling conflicts through direct dialogue.

Concerning the main topic in focus, which is related to cybersecurity, Shaikha Haya underscored the importance of this issue for the entire world. As a matter of fact, she said, it is deemed necessary to put this issue at the top of the meeting’s agenda. She added that the UNGA Presidents discussed this issue and cybercrimes and ways of dealing with them. She noted that the issue of cybersecurity will be discussed further in South Korea in the next meeting before being transferred to the General Assembly as a recommendation and working out a common legal model to handle electronic crimes.

Regarding the expected recommendations of the UNCPGA meeting, Shaikha Haya said that they will include thanking Bahrain for hosting the meeting, fostering global peace and security and calling to solve the Ukrainian issue diplomatically and stop war. She added that the Kingdom of Bahrain and the GCC countries have always supported a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian issue, especially as the war there has an impact on all the world, particularly the poor countries.

Shaikha Haya concluded by affirming the great support accorded by His Majesty the King to the meeting, noting the unflinching royal support to the activation of the principles of the UN Charter, mainly with regard to human rights and respecting human dignity. She pointed out coexistence, peace and acceptance of the other as characteristic features of the Bahraini community and values that are deeply enshrined in the kingdom’s constitution and National Action Charter.
