Shoukry urges int’l community to shoulder its responsibilities towards food, climate crises

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities regarding the world food and climate crises which have become closely relevant to maintaining international peace and security.

Shoukry’s remarks were made during an annual ceremony to celebrate the UN Day held by the Foreign Ministry and the UN Resident Office in Cairo at Orman Garden.

This year’s UN Day is held under the theme of “Solidarity, Sustainability and Science” to mark the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

The ceremony coincides with the 77th anniversary of establishing the UN and the convocation of the UN Climate Conference, COP27, due to kick off in Sharm El Sheikh on November 7.

Shoukry was keen on attending the event in the presence of UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova along with a galaxy of officials at the UN offices and heads of diplomatic missions in Egypt, senior Foreign Ministry officials, media figures and UN goodwill ambassadors.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry reaffirmed that the success of COP27 requires a consolidation of efforts from all parties with the aim of achieving the objectives of the climate action and realizing funding sustainability.

Shoukry also noted that this year’s ceremony to mark the 77th UN charter anniversary is a new opportunity for Egypt to renew its commitment to the adhering to the objectives and principles and purposes of the UN charter in addition to enhancing cooperation with the member states to bolster the collective and multilateral action so as to achieve peoples’ aspirations.

The foreign minister also noted in his speech that choosing Orman botanic garden symbolized Egypt’s affirmation on the need for pushing forward efforts to realize the sustainable development goals through the national strategy for Egypt: “Egypt Vision 2030” as well as the various developmental initiatives such as “Decent Life” presidential initiative.

The top diplomat praised the role played by the UN Office in Cairo in beefing up cooperation between Egypt and the international organization.

During the ceremony, Shoukry and Panova planted a tree at Orman garden as a symbol of commitment to environmental conservation and to mark Egypt’s hosting of COP27.
