The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee in Amman (ACA) and the Petra University held Tuesday an ASEAN Forum entitled “Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Middle East: Opportunities and Prospects”, on the occasion of 56th Anniversary of ASEAN Day.
The Malaysian Ambassador and Chairman of ACA, Mohamad Nasri Abdul Rahman, told the media, “2023 is a special year for ASEAN as we celebrate 56 years of unity and togetherness despite our diversity in political, economic progress and socio-cultural spheres.”
He presented the evolution of ASEAN since its inception in 1967 from an organisation focusing on political agenda to economic prosperity, stability and building an inclusive and harmonious society, according to a statement.
He said, “Against the backdrop of the Cold War and regional disputes still fresh in mind, ASEAN today has become a successful and strategic organisation with its 1967 Bangkok Declaration and the ASEAN Charter and the subsequent documents form the basis of engagement and cooperation among the ten Member States. Its unique diplomatic engagement known as the ASEAN Way has helped Member States to maintain peace, security and stability of the Southeast Asian region.”
He said the ASEAN Association established relations, cooperation and partnership in fruitful mutual dialogue with its partners and with host countries and relevant international organisations through the diplomatic representation of ASEAN countries, adding that the ASEAN Forum “acts as a bridge” for interaction and participation with Jordan and the Middle East.
He stressed that the ASEAN Committee in Amman attaches “great importance” to cooperation with concerned parties in Jordan.
