Abu Dhabi: Special Olympics UAE has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sakina, a mental health platform initiated by PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East. This collaboration is aimed at providing comprehensive mental health support to athletes part of Special Olympics UAE, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being within the community.
According to Emirates News Agency, the partnership includes training for Sakina's medical and administrative staff by Special Olympics UAE to equip them with the necessary skills to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is part of the Unified Healthcare Providers training program, which ensures tailored psychological care for athletes.
The agreement further stipulates annual mental health check-ups for Special Olympics UAE athletes, with referrals to Sakina clinics when necessary. Mohamed Khalifa Al Nuaimi, a Member of the Board of Trustees of Special Olympics UAE, highlighted the commitment to working with leading healthcare providers to enhance services available to athletes. He emphasized that the partnership presents an opportunity to offer specialized mental health support, aligning with the vision of providing integrated care for individuals with disabilities.
Sakina will also engage in Special Olympics UAE's Strong Minds programme, focusing on preventive mental health care for athletes. The collaboration extends to a mental health awareness campaign, which will include lectures and psychological support sessions for people of determination, their families, and caregivers. Additionally, a psychological education programme will be launched, featuring workshops and support groups for community stakeholders.
Dr. Zain Ali Al Yafei, CEO of Sakina, reiterated the importance of the partnership, stating that the MoU with Special Olympics UAE aims to advance mental health care for all, ensuring equal opportunities and a sustainable positive impact through an integrated approach.
