Streamlining stakeholder efforts and deploying well-defined plans and strategies have the potential of reducing traffic accidents and putting an end to the “ongoing bloodshed on the roads”, Interior Minister Mazen Faraya said. The minister made the remarks Thursday at the start of the third national workshop held under the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund-funded “Awareness Campaigns and Law Enforcement to Promote the Use of Seat Belts and Child Protection Seats” project. Faraya pointed out that the workshop is a direct result of Jordan’s efforts to reduce road accidents under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II. He stated that the Ministry of Interior, through the Public Security Department, was proactive in raising public awareness of traffic safety via all available channels and held social events and lectures in a number of cities and governorates. According to Faraya, the growing number of traffic accidents is reason enough to work together with relevant authorities to revise the current traffic law, since there were nearly 170,000 traffic accidents in the Kingdom in 2022, resulting in 562 deaths, and around 160,000 traffic accidents in 2021, resulting in 589 deaths.
