Syrian-Iraqi talks to enhance water cooperation, confront climate change

Syria and Iraq has discussed prospects for joint cooperation and means to unify visions and positions regarding shared water in light of climate change that threatens the region in general, and Syria and Iraq in particular.

That came during a meeting in Baghdad between Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Tammam Raad and his Iraqi counterpart, Mahdi al-Hamdani.

Minister Raad, in a statement to SANA correspondent in Baghdad, underlined the importance of the Iraqi efforts exerted in organizing the second Baghdad Conference on Water and Climate Change.

He shed light on the necessity of continuing to develop relations and joint cooperation between the two brotherly countries through mutual visits and organizing courses on studies of climate change and its impact on both countries.

For his part, minister al-Hamdani stressed in a similar statement to SANA correspondent the depth of joint cooperation between the two countries.

He affirmed the importance of the joint research center to benefit from the experiences of the riparian States with Iraq.

He also highlighted the need to obtain equitable water quotas, taking into account the sharing of damage in times of crisis, and the continuation of holding periodic and technical ministerial meetings.

The works of the 2nd Baghdad International Water Conference was launched last Saturday under the slogan “Water and Climate Change”, with the participation of a Syrian delegation led by Dr. Raad, and delegations from several Arab and foreign countries and organizations.
