Baghdad The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, affirmed that the security situation in Iraq is stable, and the tourism sector is in continuous development.

A presidential statement stated: “The President met with the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, and her accompanying delegation, in the presence of Minister of Culture Ahmed Al-Badrani, Minister of Education Ibrahim Namess, and Iraq’s Ambassador to France, Wadea Beti.”

During the meeting, he stressed the need to pay attention and focus on reviving the rich Iraqi antiquities and heritage and working to restore what was damaged from these antiquities as a result of the vandalism they suffered at the hands of terrorism.

He also stressed the need to strengthen ways of cooperation between Iraq and UNESCO and work to develop the sectors of education, culture and science, and to preserve the heritage and cultural diversity in the country.

The President of the Republic stated that Iraq is rich in its archaeological features, referring to the ancient city that was recently discovered in Dohuk Governorate and other historical sites that have not been discovered so far throughout Iraq, stressing the need to conduct a comprehensive survey by forming a permanent working team.

He also shed light on the educational and cultural level in Iraq, stressing that Iraq was a symbol of education and culture, and we must start developing the educational environment.

For her part, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, praised the achievements of Iraq on the cultural and educational levels, as well as the preservation of the cultural, human and archaeological heritage in the country, stressing the organization’s readiness to provide all possible support to Iraq in order to preserve the distinguished Iraqi antiquities and heritage.

Azoulay added that the visits of Pope Francis and French President Emmanuel Macron have inspired us a lot, stressing the organization’s commitment to the city of Mosul and Iraq in general.

She indicated that the organization will send bells from France to the churches of Mosul, stressing that what concerns everyone is that cultural life will return to this city./ End
