UAE Team Emirates-XRG Ready to Defend Giro d’Italia Title with Dual Leadership

Dubai: UAE Team Emirates-XRG are set to begin their title defence at the 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia, the first Grand Tour of the season, known for its demanding climbs and stunning landscapes.

According to Emirates News Agency, Spanish rider Juan Ayuso leads the team’s charge as one of the race favourites, arriving in top form after a standout early season that included a dominant general classification win at Tirreno-Adriatico. Ayuso, 22, expressed his excitement ahead of the Giro, emphasising his strong preparation and his love for racing in Italy.

Ayuso stated, “It’s been a great start to the season. I’ve found a good rhythm without any setbacks. I love racing in Italy – it feels like home. Training camp went perfectly, and I’m ready for one of the most beautiful races on the calendar.”

Ayuso will share leadership duties with Adam Yates, an experienced Grand Tour contender, providing the team with a dual-threat approach. Yates’ experience in the high mountains will be crucial, while the team’s support lineup includes strong climbers Jay Vine and Isaac Del Toro, who will set the pace on challenging stages.

Mikel Landa, another prominent climber, will lead Soudal-Quick-Step in the absence of Remco Evenepoel, bringing his own ambitions for a high general classification finish.

The 2025 Giro d’Italia covers 3,413 km across 21 stages, featuring a mix of five mountain stages, eight hilly tests, six sprint stages, and two-time trials. The race begins with a punchy finish on Stage 1, followed by a short time trial on Stage 2, providing an early test for the general classification contenders.

Key stages for the title favourites include the uphill finishes on Stages 5 and 7, where the first decisive gaps could emerge. The unpredictable terrain and relentless climbs make the Giro a true test of endurance and strategy.

Backed by a strong UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad, Juan Ayuso enters the Giro as a serious contender for the Maglia Rosa, with the team aiming to maintain their Grand Tour success.
