The UAE University (UAEU), in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University, held a specialised seminar, “Impact of climate change on coastal areas and shallow marine environments in the UAE and Oman”, at the Expo City Dubai, as part of the UAE University’s activities on the side-lines of COP28.
Professor Ahmed Murad, Associate Provost for Research, said, “This important scientific symposium reflects our commitment to combating climate change impacts on our coastal areas and shallow marine environments. It also enhances the cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University and the National Water and Energy Centre at the UAE University on this vital issue.”
He added that this symposium represents an opportunity to share the latest research and knowledge about the impacts of climate change on the UAE and Oman coastal regions. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas and work together to understand these challenges and develop strategies to preserve the fragile marine environment.
He also said that the UAE University is c
onducting relevant research and will continue to work with all partners to achieve the goals of environmental sustainability and resilience and to continue this valuable dialogue and constructive cooperation for a better future for the coastal regions in the UAE, Oman, and the world.
Prof. Amer Al Hinai, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and Research at Sultan Qaboos University, said that the current research project on the impact of climate change on coastal areas and shallow marine environments in the two countries aims to obtain an understanding of the effects of human and natural changes in the Sea of Oman.
“It is expected that this joint effort will achieve a number of goals, including assessing the effects of regional climate change on land and sea, surveying changes caused by various natural and human causes over the past decades, estimating environmental degradation of wildlife habitats and identifying continuing risks to the shallow marine environment and land-sea interaction,” he add
ed.
The seminar attracted a group of environmental and climate change professionals, environmental institutions, academics, and students. This seminar is a platform to provide dialogue on environmental sustainability and resilience, which aligns with global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change on fragile marine systems.
