Manama, Bahrain is among three nations that had the honor to have a woman President of the United Nations General Assembly, a fact that speaks volumes of women’s empowerment efforts by the leadership, a senior UN official has said.

Chairman of the Council of the Presidents of United Nations General Assembly (CPUNGA) Han Seung-Soo praised His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s far-sighted leadership.

“His Majesty is very kind as we had a very cordial and interactive meeting and HM was very gracious and I am impressed with his very supportive stance,” he told Bahrain News Agency.

“HM the King assured all support to CPUNGA and I am very much encouraged by HM’s remarks. His Majesty was extremely happy to have Bahrain host the UN meeting. His Majesty also explained the role that Bahrain has been playing in relation to the United Nations. I am very optimistic about the future of Bahrain as this is a unique country in this part of the world.”

In its Bahrain Declaration at the end of the two-day meeting, the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly “expressed its sincere gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his generous hospitality and welcomed his proposal to establish a Foundation to support the work of the UNCPGA around the world.”

The Declaration also expressed its warm appreciation to Shaika Haya Rashed bint Rashid Al Khalifa, President of the 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, for hosting its session in Manama.

Shaikha Haya was the third woman President of the United Nations General Assembly, Han Seung-Soo said.

“The first woman president was appointed in 1953 and now this is the 77th session of the United Nations, which means that the UN produced 77th Presidents,” he said.

Han Seung-Soo applauded the role of Shaikha Haya and commended Bahrain’s leadership for appointing female diplomats, which led a Bahraini woman to assume the post of the top diplomat at the global platform like the United Nations.

He highlighted the importance of the issue of cybersecurity as a focal point in the discussions during the meeting, and stressed that it is one of the greatest problems facing humanity today.

“As digital technology develops, cybercrime is becoming more and more a problem. But you know each country has its own ideas and it’s very difficult to unite all the nations in dealing with such issues,” he said.

“Therefore, I thought that UNCPGA should take this important initiative by not only discussing it but also by coming up with a solution on how to cope with it collectively. Eventually, we would like to have some kind of organization that studies cybersecurity and through this way, we’ll be able to help humanity deal with this problem.”
