NEW YORK, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the decision of Saudi Arabia and Iran to resume diplomatic relations within two months.

The two countries made the announcement in a joint statement with China, in Beijing late Friday.

The UN Secretary General appreciates the role of China in hosting the talks and its efforts to reach an agreement between the two sides, Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement, adding that he also hailed the role of Oman and Iraq in the matter.

Good and stable relations between Saudi and Iran is essential to bring stability to the Gulf region, said Dujarric. He added that the UN is ready to exert further efforts to boost regional dialogue and ensure peace and stability in the Gulf.
