US stocks closed lower Tuesday as indices lost around 0.6% apiece. The Dow Jones lost almost 200 points, or 0.59%, to close at 33,402. The S and P 500 fell 23 points, or 0.58% to finish at 4,100. Both indices ended their four-day winning streak. The Nasdaq decreased 63 points, or 0.52%, to end the day at 12,126. The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 3.3% to 19.14, and the 10-year US Treasury yield lost 2.5% to at 3.344%. The dollar index fell 0.5% to 101.58, while the euro rose 0.6% to $1.0958 against the greenback. Precious metals were on the rise, with gold adding 1.9% to $2,022 per ounce and silver jumping 4.2% to $25.01 Oil prices were mixed, with global benchmark Brent crude falling 0.1% to $84.83 per barrel, but US benchmark West Texas Intermediate rising 0.1% to $80.53.
