President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou said on Wednesday that we should never abandon the struggle for the termination of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus and the island’s reunification.
Addressing an event for the national days of the 25th of March 1821 and the 1st of April 1955, she said that we should continue the efforts “tirelessly and intensively, making use of all political and diplomatic instruments at the level of the European Union and the United Nations”. We must, she added, engage international players by constantly highlighting the Cyprus problem with the aim of stopping Ankara’s policy to deviate from the agreed basis for a Cyprus solution.
She referred to the “threats and neo-Ottoman aspirations of Turkey”, the “unacceptable claims of the Turkish Cypriot leadership for a two-state solution” saying that the heroes who lost their lives for their country show us the path and inspire us to build a new vision for our homeland.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
