Our primary consideration is to achieve a solution for an independent and truly sovereign state, free from any anachronistic guarantees and the presence of occupying troops, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis has stressed. In his address Sunday at the memorial service of the fighters of the EOKA 1955-59 liberation struggle, in the Chloraka community, the Spokesman stressed that the government is working to achieve the end of the occupation and reunify the country through the achievement of a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem. A solution, he added, “which should be based on the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the decisions of the Security Council and be in line with the principles and values of the European Union”. He said that the “heritage that we are honoring today dictates our duty, to struggle for the end of the occupation, for the unity of the state, the safeguarding of the human rights and basic freedoms of all Cypriot people”. Referring to the anticolonial struggle 1955-1959, he said that we turn to the past, to learn lessons, to reflect and draw examples from the heroism of those we honor today. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
