Kampala: Jordan is participating in the nineteenth Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Third South Summit of the Group of 77 in Kampala, Uganda, with a delegation headed by Minister of State Wajih Azaizeh.

Azaizeh said in a speech that Jordan contributed to establishing the Non-Aligned Movement in 1955 to seek freedom, justice and balance in international relations.

He said that 69 years after the Bandung Conference in Indonesia, “The Ten Bandung Principles still serve as a beacon that guides us through common challenges and let us reaffirm our commitment to these principles as we work together to address the complex issues facing our world today.”

He added, “The ultimate goal of the international community, societies and peoples as a whole is to live in security and peace and achieve development, well-being and social progress.”

He said, “We in Jordan believe that the starting point for achieving international cooperation and solidarity for peace and development lies in renewing confidence in mult
ilateral diplomacy, activating the role of collective diplomacy represented by the UN and revitalising the role of the movement to resolve regional conflicts that threaten global stability and exhaust development efforts.”

Azaizeh stressed, “At the top of these conflicts is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and its broader framework represented by the Arab-Israeli conflict, for which the issue of achieving a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, especially establishing an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national territory, represents a fundamental priority for Jordan.”

“We strongly affirm the urgent need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to end the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip… We condemn Israel’s violations of international law and humanitarian norms and warn against the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland, he said, noting the “need” to address the right of return and compensation for refugees within the fr
amework of a comprehensive solution.

Azaizeh renewed Jordan’s commitment to protecting Islamic and Christian holy places, especially in occupied Jerusalem, based on the historical custodianship of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

He said that the Israeli occupation’s attempts to change the existing legal and historical status in the occupied Jerusalem undermine the prospects for achieving lasting peace, adding, “We must collectively condemn such actions and strive to preserve the sanctity and status of Jerusalem and recognise it as a common heritage for all humanity.”

He said, “We support the role of the International Court of Justice, especially in terms of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and we call for the completion of the International Criminal Court’s investigations into war crimes committed against the Palestinian people while emphasising the importance of accountability and combating impunity.”

He added, “The Aqaba meetings are an initiative complementary to Jordan’s commitment to combating terrori
sm. We will not be able to create a world free of the scourge of terrorism except through collective efforts.”

He stressed the “importance” of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, adding that Jordan supports the results of the UN conferences in this regard and encourages reaching binding legal instruments to eliminate weapons of mass destruction in the region.

“Our call for continued support in the field of disarmament is in line with our commitment to global security and stability,” he added.

Azaizeh added that addressing geopolitical tensions, food and energy security, inflation, financial market fluctuations, displacement issues, and the refugee crisis requires international cooperation.

He said Jordan supports efforts to combat the effects of climate change, preserve biodiversity and support the outcomes of climate conferences.

“Jordan’s focus on national water projects, smart agriculture and the 2030 Agenda reflects our commitment to balanced economic, social and environmental
development,” Azaizeh said, adding, “We express our concern about the financing gap for the sustainable development goals and call for increased support while highlighting the need for comprehensive global efforts to accelerate progress.”
