WGS 2024: Creative industries are focus of future economy and one of its drivers

DUBAI: The creative economy has recently emerged as a significant contributor to the global economy and a primary driver of growth for nations.

It is founded on the production and dissemination of knowledge, as well as the utilisation of its outcomes and accomplishments. This economy is the result of the interplay between three elements: human creativity, technology, and investment in knowledge.

Knowledge stands as a pivotal source of societal wealth, contributing to its well-being by transforming creative concepts into goods and services that can be published, exhibited, traded, and consumed. Presently, creative industries are playing an increasingly vital role in the economies of major industrialised nations.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, had directed the launch of the UAE Cultural Development Fund and the Creative Industries Contributions Index, to the country’s gross domestic product.

During the session ‘The Future of Creative In
dustries: How Can Governments Harness Talent?’ at the World Governments Summit, Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, and Dustee Jenkins, Chief Public Affairs Officer of Spotify, discussed the application of effective strategies for the public sector to exploit talents and how the private sector can help governments in their strategies. They also explored ways to bridge the gap between the private sector’s dynamic talent management approach and the public sector’s efforts to create a skilled and innovative workforce, and leading talent management through a sophisticated organisational culture.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Youth’s National Strategy for Cultural and Creative Industries 2021-2031, it is defined as those industries that rely on the elements of thought, innovation, production, distribution, publication and promotion, of products and services related to creative expression and cultural heritage preservation, and whose growth and spread have a positive impact on the e
conomic and social agenda of the country.

The creative industries in the country include more than 25 cultural and creative industries with direct economic outputs, directly and effectively serving the policy of economic diversification. The government has provided about 40 initiatives, including 16 initiatives to support the talented and creative, 10 initiatives to support professionals and the business environment, and 14 to support the empowerment of the business environment.

The vision of the Ministry of Culture and Youth seeks to activate the strategy of cultural and creative industries through its vision to increase the economic and social impact and value of the cultural and creative industries sector in the UAE.
